Role of homeopathy in treating dermatitis in pets

Updated: Nov 5, 2020

The present article is a brief insight by Dr. Jeeta Dash on what actually dermatitis in pets means and how to tackle it promptly without any delay. Take a short interesting visit to the knowledge given below on homeopathy.

INTRODUCTION

Pet dermatitis is a constant worry for the pet owners. The itching, the scratching, hair fall, discomfort of the pet, repeated visits to the vet just adds to the existing woes. The monsoon season with its high temperature and humidity may aggravate the symptoms in your pet. But, with early and timely treatment one can easily curb this menace!

WHAT IS DERMATITIS?

Dermatitis is an inflammatory chronic skin condition associated with various allergens. It may be atopic dermatitis (where environmental allergens initiate inflammatory response); contact dermatitis (occurs when actual physical contact is made with a chemical or irritating substance).

WHAT CAUSES DERMATITIS?

· Dermatitis may occur from environmental allergens such as pollen, spores, dander, leaves, etc.

· Occurs from chemical substances used such as dyes, detergents, shampoos, insecticides, rubber, medications, etc.

· Occurs from food, flea collar, grooming products, etc.

· Fleas, mites, bacteria and fungal infections are also a source of dermatitis.

SYMPTOMS OF DERMATITIS

The symptoms are easily noticeable. Therefore, cautious pet parents have to look for the below signs and consult vet as early as possible!

· Excessive itching (pruritus is a characteristic sign)

· Skin rashes, red bumps, hives

· Crusting, thickening, scaling of skin

· Broken and bleeding skin due to self-mutilation

· Foul odour from flaky, scaly, greasy skin

· Secondary skin and ear infections

· Moaning and wailing while scratching

· Respiratory problems such as sneezing, sniffing, runny nose, watery eyes, etc.

WHY HOMEOPATHY?

The allopathy treatment protocol followed includes lengthy treatment with immunomodulators and medicated shampoos. The continuous use of antihistamines, corticosteroids, antifungals, fatty acid supplements seems to have various side effects in the long run. In many instances, the expenses of therapeutic protocols seem unmanageable. Moreover, not all patients show same the level of recovery.

The above shortcomings of conventional medicines led veterinarians to seek the help of unconventional therapy!

One best alternative to allopathy is the homeopathy founded by Samuel Hanhemann, based on the principle “the law of similar”. It states that symptoms or syndromes a substance causes experimentally are those that it may clinically resolve when given specially prepared, in very small doses to individuals showing similar symptoms.

Homeopathy is a recently chosen alternative widely used by veterinary medicine around the world in addition to allopathy therapeutic protocols.
