FLY WITH THE HEART NOT WITH THE WIND- II: Scope of Animal Science Subjects

This article was an outcome of days together accomplishment of questions asked by students who decided to choose animal science as their core subject in the ICAR PG entrance examination and those who are in a dilemma about their future after being into animal science subjects as a mere accident rather out of interest. This article was presented to us by Dr. Manisha from Indian Veterinary Research Institute with continuance support from subject specialists from all over India.
Completing the bachelor's degree in veterinary science itself is a herculean task. And students who wish to clear another entrance examination and study masters are truly regarded to be heroes in our profession. Then comes the confusion and questions revolving in the brain like which stream, which subject, which university or college, abroad, etc. Though we compromise with the subject or college we land in a dilemma what is our future after masters. So, here we go knowing answers for the most asked questions, which subject has a prospective future, which subject demand graph is static, which subject provides a wide range of opportunities, and so on and so far. Choosing a different path is never a backlash, either it gives us name or it gives us the experience to guide others. Let us know in detail about the career path in different animal science subjects.

It is a subject on which there goes wide research all over the world thus combining wide fields like environmental sustainability regarding issues of methane emissions from livestock to what to feed to increase all over animal efficiency. Every year eminent scientists from the animal nutrition department get prestigious awards for their unremarkable achievements both through government and private sectors. Mastering in one particular animal species like poultry, piggery, livestock, etc. will always cater to a strong career path in this subject. Apart from known assistant professor, veterinary officer, agricultural research scientist, subject matter specialist in KVK, employment opportunities for animal nutritionists are in farms, corporate research, pharmaceutical companies, pet or livestock feed companies, federal government offices, laboratories, animal welfare organizations, zoos, and wildlife rehabilitation centers are a few options of many other.

Livestock Production & Management
Mastering in this subject gives one an overall knowledge about livestock management in all prospects which builds our career too. Apart from teaching, research associate, or as a research scientist, one can choose a career as a private farm management consultant in setting up different commercial farms of large or small ruminants, piggery, poultry, and even lab animals farms like rabbits or rats. Masters in this subject gives us broad options in the areas of production, sales, and management as livestock manager, livestock consultant, livestock house designer, etc. Commercial farmers will hire these professionals by paying a high scale. One can be a successful entrepreneur by mastering in this subject as there can be no other, who will be well versed with the management of livestock than themselves.

Livestock Products & Technology
Masters in livestock products and technology give ample options in the private sector. It is the most growing concern all over the world to decrease the dependency on Agri-based foods and shift to animal-based particularly in protein deficiency countries like Africa, India, etc. Graduates of this course can work as a food technologist, nutritional therapist, quality manager, food inspector, engineers (in meat processing unit), research scientist (you can carry out experiments regarding developing of new flavor or to improve the nutritive value of a product, etc.,), in meat and milk products packaging industry, a professor in colleges and many options to start a business. Graduates in this field are recruited by the top companies in good positions with a high scale of pay like INDIA FROZEN FOODS, ALDUA FOOD PROCESSING, MEEM AGRO FOODS PVT. LTD. Etc.
Even options as food security or food safety officers at state and central levels, in FSSAI, international institutions like FAO, WHO, OIE, etc., also have broad options for professionals in this subject.
The extension is the only subject that didn't fill the vacancies in all the government and private agencies till today. Extension in India still is in its infant stage and would turn into a level like in other foreign countries like the USA, UK, etc. In every university, Extension is going to be another important activity other than education and research. Being a social science subject, it has opportunities in different social work organizations like NGOs, non-profit organizations, in rural development institutions, wildlife protection, and conservation organizations.
Government institutions like MANAGE, NAARM, NIRDPR, prefer extension specialists other than any other. An extension specialist will be skilled in writing, speaking, teaching, drawing and all other public relation-building activities. There are not as many required assistant professors, research scientists, subject matter specialists, or as training associates in KVK's.
A large number of national and international NGOs are in rural development and R&D activities hire Extension personnel in different positions like scientists, counselors, or consultants according to the academic qualifications and experience.
Livestock economics, a branch of agriculture economics has a wide scope in the present and the future too. It has been continuously developing and evolving with wide opportunities like agribusiness management, agribusiness analyst, ranch manager, production supervisor, and financial analyst. An economist can choose his career as an assistant professor in SAU’s, as an economic advisor, in the banking sector, and as a tax consultant, investments consultant for share trading and commodity market with other relevant qualifications along with an economics degree.
The prominent international agencies such as World Bank, International Labour Organization, and several NGOs recruit economists in the positions of professional economists, financial risk analysts, data analysts, economic researchers, agriculture economists, cost accountant, and financial economists.
Apart from these, using computer applications has changed the dynamics and job market. So, to beat the competition learning modern computer applications is always added cream.
Economists can start writing consultancy to the individual or corporate clients thus suggesting budget planning investments in different modes and much more.
Economists will be part of every policy that the government or any policy-making bodies like NABARD frames. One can compete for the India economic Service (IES) exam conducted by UPSC for the department of economics and statistics.

As an animal physiologist, you can choose their career in hospitals, medical schools, veterinary hospitals, universities, pharmaceutical laboratories, and crown research institutes as veterinary physiologists, lecturer, veterinary doctors, and senior scientists. It is the best subject for those students who wish to switch to human medicine and dedicate their future towards renowned research work. Jobs in the food industries, fisheries, and aquaculture firms where laboratory testing is inevitable, veterinary physiologists have a great scope. Research enthusiasts can try for world-class research and work hard for the welfare of both the human and animal communities.
According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics reports the demand for statisticians and mathematicians is expected to grow by 33% from 2016 to 2026. One can find a career in the statistical profession such as statistician, lecturer, professor, content analyst, statistic trainer, data scientist, biostatistician, market researcher, financial analyst, and cost estimator, etc. The subject demands having core knowledge of mathematics, analytics, and computer science. As a student of biostatistics, one needs to do mathematical formulations, research designs, analysis of data with various software programs, etc.
A degree in biostatistics can open the door in the field of research and development, the IT sector, in different pharmaceutical companies as a data analyst. An additional Ph.D. in Biostatistics can help to make a career in academics, research scientists as well. There is various government jobs package for Biostatistics graduates who can also apply Indian Statistical Service exams conducted by UPSC for the department of Economics and statistics. Also, one can go for fellowship programs in collaboration with various international institutions and can make a good career in the research field.
The need for subject matter specialists in all these three subjects extension, economics, and statistics is not going to be fulfilled in the near future too. Hence these subjects are a wide scope for those who wish to choose a career that is different and innovative from others.

Animal Genetics and Breeding
As an animal genetics student one can be employed by animal pharmaceutical companies or production companies where different trials on different breeds of livestock or poultry are carried out. State-level or central level breeding institutions, KVK subject matter specialist, assistant professor, agriculture research scientist, policy-making bodies, genome-related research, developing disease-resistant, highly productive animals with increased longevity on their own name is possible by mastering in this subject. Techniques that an animal genetics students learn like PCR, rtPCR, DNA isolation, electrophoresis, etc. are unique in their own way and find us a place in forensic laboratories, COVID testing labs, diagnostic labs etc.
Developing new evaluation traits and developing new cross breeds is in the hands of these professionals.

It is the sector that is growing at a very fast pace in recent years. It is the sector that provides vivid opportunities for specialists in this field like poultry nutritionists, poultry geneticists, poultry management specialists, marketing managers, etc. Even in this COVID 19 situation, where a lot many lost their jobs, it is these sectors that bring out job opportunities every other day. Hence, for students who don't want to look back to government veterinary officer jobs and settle in the private sector which gives a huge pack of salaries even to the beginners, poultry science one such the best option. One can choose a career as a research associate or scientist in different CPDO's (Central Poultry Development Organisations) all over India.

There is no rule that animal science students cannot build a successful career at the field level. There is no boundary to perform surgeries or tackle gynecological cases at the field level for a master student of LPM or LPT or any other animal science subject student. It is the old notion and times have changed. There exist wide opportunities for anyone who is dedicated to learn and explore things. Many legends are successful and happy with the diversions they take at each level of their life. The risk we take today reflects what we are tomorrow. One can shift to mass communications or journalism by opting extension education subject, one can relentlessly work for the noble prize by opting physiology or genetics, one can become a part of policy making bodies for the whole country by opting out for economics, one can become a scientist in any research institute by choosing statistics and lot more other options. It is the analysis of ourselves knowing "where I wish to see myself in the near future".
